(included with full event fee) The Friday underwater film festival is the kick off event
for the 10th annual Monterey Shootout. Over 150 underwater
photographers will gather for a weekend of seminars, shooting
and socializing. The divers will have 24 hours to shoot
their best photos and video to compete for over $15,000
in prizes.
The Monterey Peninsula is blessed to be home to some of
the finest underwater image makers. Friday night's Film Festival
will be an opportunity to see their work on the big screen
and meet the artists in person as they sign books and posters
after the show.
Norbert Wu
Internationally renowned underwater film maker, and peninsula
local, Norbert Wu will feature a recent image collection
from his new large-format book Diving the World and treat
the crowd to favorite scenes from his high-definition (HDTV)
film Under Antartic Ice for the Nature series on PBS.
In addition to the above achievements, Norbert's writing
and images have been featured in thousands of books, films,
and magazines and has published fifteen books. Norbert's
efforts have been awarded with a Pew Marine Conservation
Fellowship, National Science Foundation Artist Grants,
exhibitions in the American Museum of Natural History,
and named Outstanding Photographer of the Year by the North
American Nature Photographers Association.
Jim Watt
When photographers and editors talk of pelagic marine mammals
and sharks, Jim Watt is considered one of the premiere underwater
photographers in the world today. Jim will share his amazing
imagery of whales and dolphins which have become icons in
hundreds of underwater productions. He will also offer a
sneak peak of his latest project Faces.
From his home in Kona, Hawaii and around the world Jim has
captured the beauty of free swimming life in a sea of blue.
Jim's work has been featured in over 700 magazines and
books worldwide and has worked on assignment for large
publications such as National Geographic and Stern magazines.
Recent commercial work features his images on the tails
of new Frontier airbus jetliners.
Berkley White
Underwater artist and technology specialist, Berkley White
leads instructional underwater photo safaris around the world.
His festival presentation will feature Underexposure North,
a portfolio of the unique glaciers, aquatic wildlife, and
wrecks that define the inside passage of southeast Alaska
and British Columbia. Berkley is the owner of Backscatter
Underwater Video & Photo in Monterey and a co-founder
of the Monterey Shootout.
Scott Campbell
Professional commercial photographer, Scott Campbell, has
taken his vision and body to new depths. While Scott's
topside shooting has kept him busy with product and modeling
work, his breathhold diving techniques won him a spot spot
on the US Freedive Team and several breathhold diving records.
He now he spends his time applying his black and white
photography technique underwater. His stunning images of
pelagic life are captured on one breath... literally one
long breath and a dive into the depths. Scott has been
featured on National Geographic, Town & Country, and
many magazines featuring the Monterey area. He will be
signing his limited addition prints before and after the
show.
